Mini Class Series
The Yoga Philosophy Discussion Series
A 4 Part Series
Fridays, May 16, June 13, July 18 and August 8
7-9pm
Part 1: What is Yoga? Are we really practicing Yoga when we twist the body into pretzel shapes and perform other acrobatics? The westernized practice of Yoga can distort the true meaning of Yoga. In this session, we’ll explore Sutras 1.1-1.16 which relate to the intention of traditional Yoga practice: the ability to calm the mind. We’ll discuss various factors that cause turbulence in the mind, and ways to achieve steadiness of the mind.
Part 2: What are the causes of stress and suffering and how these are linked to the theory of “karma”. What are the conscious and unconscious ways in which we conduct our daily lives that contribute to suffering and inhibit self actualization? How can we apply the teachings of Yoga to live a more conscious, spirited life? This topic is one that is sure to engender a lot of lively discussion!
Part 3: The Eight Limbs of Yoga as described by Patanjali provide the foundation for Yoga practice. In part 1 of this 2 part topic, we’ll explore Yogic guidelines for social interaction and self-discipline, the Yamas and the Niyamas, and discuss ways in which we can simply incorporate these ancient teachings in to our everyday lives.
Part 4: Part 2 of the exploration of the Eight Limbs. What is the importance of the practices of asana, pranayama, pratyahara, dharana and dhyrana? Is samhadi attainable?
The studio will be open 30 minutes prior to the start of the discussion for anyone who would like to have some time to practice asana before sitting. We'll have tea available during our talk. Bring your own mug.
Subhash Mittal and Cyndi Bulka lead the discussions and we invite your questions and commentary! Cost: $20 or $75 for the series.
