The Yoga Philosophy Discussion Series
Part 1 of 4
Friday, May 16, 7-9pm
What is Yoga? Are we really practicing Yoga when we twist the body into pretzel shapes and perform other acrobatics? The westernized practice of Yoga can distort the true meaning of Yoga. In this session, we’ll explore Sutras 1.1-1.16 which relate to the intention of traditional Yoga practice: the ability to calm the mind. We’ll discuss various factors that cause turbulence in the mind, and ways to achieve steadiness of the mind. The studio will be open 30 minutes prior to the start of the discussion for anyone who would like to have some time to practice asana before sitting. We'll have tea available during our talk. Bring your own mug.
Subhash Mittal and Cyndi Bulka lead the discussions and we invite your questions and commentary! Cost: $20 or $75 for the series
Restorative Yoga for Balancing the Nervous System
Saturday, May 17, 11-1pm
This workshop is cancelled
Imbalances in our nervous systems can manifest in many forms, including acute or chronic stress, insomnia, irritability, mental and body fatigue, anxiety, depression and other conditions. Restorative yoga can help establish or renew balance of mind, body, and spirit, and is deeply quieting to the nervous system. Props are used to meet and support the body in poses that are held for a few minutes up to15 minutes or more. Attention on the breath and on alternately opening different parts of the body cultivates stillness in the mind and ease in the body. Restorative yoga is accessible to all levels of practice, including beginners. In this workshop, we will focus intention on balancing and quieting the nervous system.
Jeffifer Shoemaker instructs. She is a certified Advanced Relax and Renew® trainer (restorative yoga) with Judith Lasater Cost: $25
